Ive never introduced myself here before, though I lurk. Last June, I gave birth to my 2nd, Audrey at 32 weeks. I found out I was in full blown labor at my 32 week appointment and was rushed to the hospital. I guess there is a such thing as silent labor, who would have thought?! Anyway, by the time I got to my room, I was complete and ready to push. However, she was breached, so off to the OR I went. Because there was absolutely no time for steroids she was on a vent for almost 2 days and on a cpap for another 6 days or so. Thankfully, she was discharged after 29 days! Now she is a heathy happy 19lb 13 month old.... Who is about to be a big sister.
This baby wasn't planned and a big surprise to us both. So, I have questions to those who have had pregnancies after their preemie. Was the medical care different? If it was, how so? Did you have another preemie? Anything you'd care to share?? Thanks!
I'm just here to say welcome and I hope everything goes smoothly. My preemie was due to high risk pregnancy. If we ever have another, I am sure I will have extra monitoring due to high risk complications.
I didn't have any extra monitoring due to my first preemie and I had another preemie.
I did P17 shots though (maybe from 16 weeks to 34 weeks) and my Dr really believed those helped this time. I also had steriod shots the 2nd time as I ended up in the hospital for PTL around 32 weeks. (Both kids were born at 35+5, but my 2nd had a shorter NICU stay).
Interesting, Thanks! I'll start researching P17 shots. Did you end up on any kind of bedrest?
I had DS1 at 32w3d from spontaneous PTL. They didn't know why it happened, so I got the p17 shots every week with DS2 and had lots of cervical checks. I started dilating at 33 weeks and got the steroid shots. I made it until 36w0d and he was perfectly healthy - no NICU time.
Same protocol with this last pregnancy (DD is 4 months) and she made it to 37 weeks.
You have a great chance of making it to full term, especially because your OB will be watching you closely.
Also a lurker, and I'm a little late to this party, but my daughter was born at 36w (due to spontaneous PPROM, no cause determined), and I'm also pregnant again. My medical care has been a bit different this time--partly because she was early, and partly because I've had a couple of losses and am now an old lady, medically speaking . I'm still able to use midwives as my primary care, but I also see an MFM, who has done a couple of extra ultrasounds this time around. I'll also have extra monitoring toward the end, and will be getting the p17 shots with this pregnancy (starting this week, yikes). Hope that helps!
I had heard you were pregnant. Congrats! If you can't figure out who this is from the J13 board, I'll PM you. FX for a healthy 9 months!
OP, my preemie was my second, and I had spontaneous PTL, like you. I asked my dr about subsequent pregnancies. I would have p17 shots and routine ultrasounds for cervical checks. It would be considered high risk, but wouldn't have any other restrictions. Good luck and FX for a healthy 9 months.
